A Capital Conversation

Fancourt and Hamilton Locke brought together leaders from across private credit, investment, law and financial services for A Capital Conversation, a forum examining how structured, asset-backed finance is reshaping Australia’s mid-market.

The panel featured:

  • Yoni Cukierman, Chief Executive, Fancourt Capital Group
  • Zina Edwards, Head of Finance, Hamilton Locke
  • Bruce Coombes, Founder, QuickFee
  • Giacomo Gaetani, Co-Managing Partner, FutureNow Capital

The discussion explored the rapid growth of Australia’s private credit market as non- bank lenders increasingly fill the space left by traditional banks. Panellists considered how proposed capital gains tax changes may further accelerate demand for structured credit, while creating both opportunities and risks for businesses seeking flexible capital.

A central theme was that successful private credit investing depends on far more than capital or documentation. It requires patient, bespoke structuring; rigorous due diligence; a clear understanding of the assets and businesses underpinning each facility; and, above all, the people involved.

The panel also examined technology’s growing role in credit decision-making. While AI can enable faster assessment and real-time risk management, it also creates new avenues for fraud and cannot replace judgement, relationships or the ability to understand what matters to each party.

As competition increases and risk pricing tightens, enduring performance will depend on disciplined lenders willing to say no, invest in appropriate protections and assess the three fundamentals of lending: capacity, collateral and character.

The conversation reinforced Fancourt’s belief that trust and thoughtful partnership remain essential to delivering resilient long-term investment outcomes for borrowers and investors alike.
